MISTY'S DIARY JUNE 22, 2000

Mews everyone! I'm sorry I'm so late with this edition of my diary. Alot has been happening around here lately. We've been very busy. The biggest news is that our meowmie is taking care of a new family of ferral cats. Malta, the mother cat, as affectionately named by our meowmie, is a gray and white cat, mostly gray with white patches and markings. She's very friendly, and therefore, may have had a previous human owner who abandoned her. Her kittens are now about 10 weeks old, but were only around 4 weeks or so when meowmie first found them. There are 4 kittens, one with black and white patches, two with gray and white patches (mostly white), and one all gray. When meowmie first found them, they and their mother were nesting in our basement window. Our meowmie felt sorry for them and began feeding them and giving them water. But the kittens, unlike their mother, are very wild. They won't let meowmie near them. They spit and try to scratch and bite if approached. Then they run away and hide under the porch. Only the mother cat is friendly. She can be touched. She comes around meowing and purring, rubs on meowmie's legs, and looks to be petted and loved. She's a pitifully thin cat, but very sweet. Unable to catch them, meowmie continues to care for them while the kittens continue to grow and play. All seem healthy and happy. She tried and failed miserably to catch them one time. When trying to pick up one of the kittens, the kitten screamed and fought back and then their mother attacked our meowmie, scratching the backs of her legs. The mother got very cross and spat for awhile, but then soon forgot and became friendly again. Meowmie decided she wouldn't try this again! She wasn't seriously hurt, thankfully. But she has decided to leave catching these wild kittens to experts. Trouble is, who are the experts who will really help? When meowmie asked our vet what to do, he told her the VSA (Volunteer Services For Animals) would come and take them, but first meowmie would have to catch them herself. Nobody around our area seems willing to try to catch them. So they continue to remain living outdoors while meowmie makes sure they get plenty of food and clean water, and feels helpless to do more for them. Unless and until they are willing to make friends and be touched, there's nothing more she can do for them. So that's where things stand at this time with our ferral family. To view photos of them, please visit our Photopoint Album titled Rescued Kitties (or Cats, I forget which). The url is on the main front index page of this website. Coming up in July, don't forget our 4th of July pajama party! It's our celebration of our one year anniversary online with you! Also, we have been nominated for the Oscat award! Starting July 1st, you may click on the banner at the top of our index page to vote for us for the Oscat! Please vote for us! Thank you. See you next time, sooner, hopefully, than this time! Mol!
